Description
Herne, the Great Hunter and Lord of the Forest haunts the woods of old and new. You can find him causing mischief on local hiking trails to this day. Legend of his wild hunts come to us from the ancient forests of England. Shakespeare writes of him inThe Merry Wives of Windsor
. He is associated with Cernunnos, the Celtic God of fertility, life, animals, wealth and the underworld.
Depicted here with his crown of antlers, he sits atop the stump of an oak tree. He regally holds a spiraling staff as he surveys the woods before him. His piercing eyes command the attention of the wood folk. This hand painted statue also incorporates intricate detail in the forest floor which is covered in leafs, pebbles and the body of a serpent. The Serpent represents the Underworld and reincarnation.
