Description
From the deserts of South African comes Fenestraria, more commonly known as "Baby Toes." This unusual plant belongs to the large family of Aizoaceae. These are also known as "mimicry" plants, as they are particularly good at camouflaging and blending into their environment. "Baby Toes" gets into name from its finger-like leaves in upright clusters. Each "finger" of the plant features a translucent window. Sunlight filters through the window to enable photosynthesis.
In desert environments, oftentimes only the window is visible above the sand. At home, plant "Baby Toes" in soil with less organic material and more gritty fill such as gravel, pumice, or perlite. This will help provide essential drainage. "Baby Toes" also needs bright light and well-drained soil. It is somewhat frost tolerant, but will need to be protected to prevent scarring. Watch "Baby Toes" in the late summer through fall, when it will bloom with bright, 2-inch yellow flowers.
Note:
This plant is especially well suited in the creation of a miniature garden or fairy garden.
