  • Condition: This vintage political-themed Democratic Party handkerchief is 'new old stock'/NOS, has never been used, still has original local Cleveland, Ohio Dept. store paper price tag and gold oval paper tag stating 'all cotton, R.N. 16153" attached. We believe this dates to period of pre- John F. Kennedy, elected in 1961, who was the next Democratic President after Truman, as Kennedy is not listed and Truman is still alive on the handkerchief. Made of 100%, made and printed in the USA. No stains, spots, tears, odors, rips, holes, issues noted- we did not iron this for concern over the original paper tags getting damaged by iron. Colors are bright, printing is crisp. We believe this was sold as a ladies handkerchief, as a man's would be larger, typically, although both sexes could use it. Measures: about 13.5 inches square.     Description

    FEATURED:   A great slice of the United States Political advertising world, this wonderful late 1950's Cotton Handkerchief, with the iconic graphics of the Democratic Party's mascot, the Donkey, featured all around this charming, fun and never-used cotton item.  Great crisp graphics, both with this famous animal and with information about the Party's history and the United States Democratic Party Presidents, through Harry S. Truman are featured.  In this handkerchief we see that President Truman is still alive (he died in 1972) and the next President after him, John F. Kennedy, elected in 1962, is not listed, so we feel this handkerchief dates to the late 1950's era, and is what is termed 'new old stock', or NOS, as it still has its Cleveland, Ohio Department store (the Higbee Company- a well-known local store for decades in Cleveland) original paper price tag attached and in great shape, as well as its original gold foil paper label " 100% cotton, R.N. 16153' also still attached, so never used/washed, and in great shape!  Although it is of the ladies hanky size, at about 13.5 inches square,  it certainly could be used by either sex- men's were usually not scalloped around the edges like this one, and were a larger size, too, but still could be a unisex item, certainly.   The classic Red, White and Blue colors are great, as is the Donkey's coloring, as these are mint-fresh from a political souvenirs collection that was carefully stored away for all these decades. Items like this were certainly made in the USA, printed here also; we do not know the manufacturer or artist, but do know it would be a great gift for someone involved/interested in American politics, or Advertising items, which this also really is, and for the 'hanky' collector, well, this is a most unusual item to have, and in such wonderful shape.  It would be a charming, interesting item if framed up as textile/political art, and certainly a great conversation piece as well, especially these days when Politics looms so large in our lives!
    Measures:  About 13.5 inches square, never washed/used, 100% cotton and made in the USA.  Scalloped edges, machine bound, around all four sides, and great graphics of both the beloved Democratic Party Donkey everywhere, and informative text about the Party and its Presidents up through Harry S. Truman, who is listed here as still alive.  We date this to the late 1950's.  Both the original local store ( in Cleveland, Ohio) price tag and the 100% cotton R.N. tag are still attached and in great condition also.  A great little slice of American political history and the Democratic Party as well!
